On this page you will find answers to some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) regarding Runbox Web Hosting.

What are the Name Servers for my Runbox Web Hosting account?

The Name Servers to use for your Runbox Web Hosting account are:

  • ns1.runbox.net
  • ns2.runbox.net

What if I don't want to use the Runbox Name Servers?

You do not have to use the Runbox Name Servers to use you Runbox Web Hosting account. If you do not, make sure you setup an "A Record" in the DNS information of the Name Servers you are using. This "A Record" needs to point to our web hosting server IP address:

  • 174.133.205.219

Please note that if you are not using the Runbox Name Servers then you will have to manually maintain the DNS information for your domain. For example, if you add a Subdomain to your web hosting account from your cPanel then you will have to manually add the subdomain "A Record" to your domain's DNS information because cPanel can only update DNS information if you are using our Name Servers.

How can I access the cPanel for my Runbox Web Hosting account if my Name Server or "A Record" changes haven't resolved yet?

You can always login to the cPanel for your account using the Runbox.net server name or IP Address:

Use your Runbox Web Hosting Account username and password.

How do I setup my Runbox Email account for email hosting if I'm using the Runbox Name Servers?

When a new web hosting account is created the "MX Record" in the domain's DNS information on the Runbox Name Servers is automatically set to "mx.runbox.com". So the only thing you need to do is make sure your Runbox Email account is setup to receive emails for your domain. Please refer to Email Hosting Setup for details.

Does my Runbox Web Hosting Account have a Dedicated IP Address or can I get a Dedicated IP Address?

All Runbox Web Hosting accounts are on a shared IP address. This means that all domains go to the same shared server IP address and the server determines which account to use from the domain name used in the URL.

You may purchase a Dedicated IP Address for your Runbox Web Hosting Account. Please refer to Price Plans: Webhosting Add-ons.

Can I register a domain with Runbox or transfer my existing domain registration to Runbox?

At this time Runbox does not provide domain registration services. We can provide email hosting for your domain through a Runbox Email Account and web hosting through a Runbox Web Hosting Account (included with each Runbox Email Account).

I have more than one domain, can I host them all with Runbox Web Hosting?

Each Runbox Email account includes one web hosting account. If you have Runbox Email Subaccounts, each subaccount can have it's own web hosting account.

In addition, each web hosting account is capable of hosting additional domains beyond the main account domain.

If you have additional domains that will be using the same web files as your main domain you would add those to your web hosting account as Parked Domains using your web hosting account cPanel. An example of this would be if you have "mydomain.com" and "mydomain.net" and want them to both go to the web site. Your main domain could be setup with "mydomain.com" and you could add "mydomain.net" as a Parked Domain.

If you have additional domains that need to have different web files then you would add those to your web hosting account as Addon Domains using your web hosting account cPanel. Addon Domains share the resources of your web hosting account (e.g. space, bandwidth, databases) with your main domain but still appear to be independent web sites to visitors of your Addon Domains.

I don't have my own domain, can I still use Runbox Web Hosting?

Yes. We can assign you a subdomain off of "web.runbox.net". Your subdomain will be something like "a1234567.web.runbox.net" where "a1234567" is a unique identifier assigned to your web hosting account.

There may be some limitations of using a subdomain over a main domain but, in general, the subdomain will work the same as a regular domain.

Can I use the File space from my Runbox Email Account with my Runbox Web Hosting account?

No. The Runbox Email service and Runbox Web Hosting service do not share file servers.

Can I get Secure Shell (SSH) access to my web hosting account?

No. We do not provide SSH access to Runbox Web Hosting accounts.

Can I setup email accounts or mailing lists with my Runbox Web Hosting account?

No. Email is only provide through your Runbox Email account, not through your web hosting account.

If you want additional Runbox Email accounts for your hosted domain you can purchase any number of Runbox Email Subaccounts. Subaccounts have all the features of a Runbox Email account, including a web hosting account, but is owned by the parent account and costs less. Please refer to Sub-Accounts for details.

Can I access one of my MySQL databases externally?

Yes. For external MySQL access you would use your domain name as the host domain and a port address of "3306". The username and password to the database would be whatever you setup for the database.

You also need to grant access to the database for the IP address accessing the database. You need to do this from your cPanel under "Remote MySQL >> Add Access Host".

What version of PHP is available?

You can use PHP 4 and PHP 5. Files with an extension of ".php4" will use PHP 4. Files with an extension of ".php5" will use PHP 5. The default for files with extension of ".php" is PHP 4.

Can I change the default for PHP files to PHP4?

As of the March 2009 server update the default PHP (.php) is PHP5. Prior to that it was PHP4. You can change the default for ".php" to PHP4 if your software requires PHP4.

Log into your cPanel and go to Apache Handlers under the Advanced section. Under Create An Apache Handler set the Handler to "application/x-httpd-php4" and the Extension(s) to ".php". Press the Add button to add the new handler. User Defined Apache Handlers override System Apache Handlers.
