IMAP for Mozilla Thunderbird

To set up Mozilla Thunderbird with Runbox Mail Manager, follow the step-by-step instructions below. Please note that the setup process and dialog boxes on your computer may vary from what is shown here, depending on what version of Microsoft Windows and Mozilla Thunderbird you are using (these instructions apply directly to Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5 on a Windows XP platform).

There are several ways in creating new accounts in Thunderbird. We will cover one of them here.

1. Start Thunderbird using for instance the Start menu. Click "File -> New" in the toolbar at the top of your screen, and select "Account...".

2. You will get a dialog box similar to this. Select the radio button for "Email account", and click "Next" to continue.

3. In the next dialog box, type your name and email address as you want it to appear in all your outgoing email messages, and click "Next" to continue.

4. Now, enter "imap.runbox.com" in the field for Incoming mail server (IMAP), and "smtp.runbox.com" as Outgoing mail server (SMTP).

5. Enter your Runbox username, in both the "Incoming User Name" field and the "Outgoing User Name".

6. Enter the Account name of your choice.

7. Verify the information.

8. Now, go to the "Tools menu" - "Account Settings".

9. Click on "Server Settings", then on the "Advanced" button.

10. The IMAP server directory should be "INBOX". According to this forum thread you might want to change the "Maximum number of server connections to cache" to 4 instead of the default 5.

11. Click "OK". Now, back in the Account settings click on "Outgoing Server" and "Edit".

12. Runbox uses SMTP authentication to secure the Runbox server against abuse. To specify this, fill in your Runbox username. Check the box for "Use name and password" and click "OK".

The setup of Thunderbird with Runbox Mail Manager is now complete.

Note: When saving sent messages on the server using Thunderbird, the Webmail will not display the message timestamps in folder view. A new IMAP server without this issues is in its final testing stages and is available on imap.runbox.com port 1143 instead of the default port 143. Please see the IMAP help page for other Known Issues with the current IMAP server.
